Ministry hopeful of averting indefinite port strike

The Shipping Ministry today expressed hope that the indefinite strike called by the port unions starting tomorrow would be averted.

Minister of State for Shipping Mukul Roy said "a meeting is scheduled to be held tomorrow between the recognised trade unions and port authorities. I expect that some solution will emerge and the strike will not take place."

The All India Port and Dock Workers Federation had called an indefinite strike across 12 major ports across the country demanding wage revision.

The government is expected to lose revenue worth Rs 1,000 crore per day due to the strike.

On the draught situation at Haldia, Roy told reporters here that both capital and maintenance dredging was required to improve the situation.

He, however, said the situation was improving of late
