DIRECT ADMISSION OF STUDENTS ABROAD SCHEME

Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) Scheme

Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) Scheme was notified by Ministry of Human Resource Development in May, 2001, for implementation the Central Engineering institutions (other than IITs) to facilitate the foreign nationals studying in any country, including India, wards of persons of Indian origin and non resident Indians to pursue technical education in India. This scheme was already in existence in the IITs, however, Council of IITs took a decision to abolish the scheme in its meeting held on 21-05-2002 due to poor response. The scheme is since continuing in NITs (previously RECs), IIITs, SPA, SLIET, NIFT, NERIST. The scheme is implemented through Educational Consultants India Ltd., (Ed. CIL), which is designated as coordinating agency and a Single Window Facility Admissions (SWFA) for the eligible students.

The main features of the scheme are as given below:-







1. All foreign nationals studying in any country including India or Indian Nationals studying abroad who fulfill prescribed admission criteria shall be eligible.

2. Prescribed admission criteria for Indian Nationals is at least 5 years of education, inclusive of 11th & 12th or equivalent (not beyond), in a foreign country during the last 8 years and must pass the qualifying examination from abroad. However, from 2008-09, the prescribed criteria has been changed to 3 year of education inclusive of 11th & 12th or equivalent (not beyond) in foreign country during the last six years, and passing the qualifying examination abroad.

3. Number of seats reserved for this category of students in different institutions shall be nearly 15% of the total number of seats offered for admission. This shall be available in different disciplines proportionately. These seats shall be supernumerary.

4. Education Consultant India Ltd. (Ed. CIL) has been designated as ‘Coordinating Agency’ and a ‘Single Window Facility Admissions’ for the eligible students in this category.

5. Ed. CIL is also be responsible for publicity, issue, receipt and processing of applications and allocation of students to different institutes/disciplines as per merit list of the students whose candidatures are found valid. Ed.CIL collects from the students an application-cum-processing fee of US $ 350 per student.

6. Admission requirements like age and academic qualifications etc. are similar to the requirements for admission of Indian nationals studying in India.

7. A tuition fee of US $ 4000 per annum is charged from students in this category. Foreign nationals from SAARC countries seeking admission through this channel are allowed 50% fee waiver provided they are studying in SAARC countries only.

8. The policy directions for the implementation of the DASA Scheme are issued by Ministry of Human Resource Development from time to time.
