Delhi University to decentralize SC/ST admissions

Delhi University will decentralize admissions for SC/ST candidates this year. Colleges will bring out cutoffs for SC/ ST candidates similar to those for general category and OBC candidates. Further, DU will introduce online registration this year. However, candidates will have the option of registering over the counter.

The university is expected to announce the new admission policies by next week. SC/ST category admissions have been centralized so far, with the university giving admission slips to the candidates, after which they approach the colleges they have been allotted. A senior official said the university is planning to allow colleges to conduct the admissions. According to DU sources, decentralization of SC/ ST admissions is not part of recommendations by the high-powered committee.

Sports admissions will also be decentralized and colleges will conduct the trials. However, the university will set up a centralized committee to supervise sports admissions at the college level, said the official. Another change likely to be introduced in sport admissions is attaching equal weight to trials and certificates.

Till last year, 75% weight was given to certificates, while trials composed the remaining 25%. The high-powered committee suggested equal weight for both.

Meanwhile, the university is likely to accept most of the recommendations by the high-powered committee for admission reforms at the undergraduate level. The committee, which submitted its report on March 5, 2012, proposed wide-ranging reforms for this year's admission process.

The recommendations include introduction of centralized online registration, reducing the admission days to two for every cutoff list, and deduction of Rs 1,000 in case of cancellation of admission within due date. Further, it recommended doing away with migration in the second and third years
