3000 schools in Bengal get computers

With a view to equipping students in the State with quality computer training, the School Education Department and IT Department of West Bengal government has undertaken a concerted initiative by providing computers to about 3,000 schools in the State.

Close to 2,000 schools in the State already possess computers from various resources, according to a press statement issued by the State IT Department.

The State government also plans to provide computer training to teachers of high schools. Dr Sankar Sen, former Minister-in-charge, Department of Power, has devised a new course module suitable for this training, the release said.

A number of high school teachers from the State received certificates for completing quality computer training at an event in Presidency College recently. Mr Partha De, Minister-in-charge, Department of School Education, Dr Debesh Das, Minister-in-charge, IT and Biotechnology, Dr Sankar Sen were some of the luminaries present at the meeting.

A number of higher education institutes in the state were also working in tandem with the IT department to impart computer training to teachers. Each high school of each district has been brought under the wings of a university specially designated for the training curriculum, the release said.

The State IT department has already completed training for 1,200 teachers and hopes to train around 3,000 teachers in the first phase by November 2010.
