DEVISE TO KEEP LOCO DRIVERS ON TOES
The Railways have decided to introduce vigilance controlled device in the locos aiming to avert accidents caused by drivers dozing off.
Passenger services committee chairman Derek O'Brien said that in the first phase 550 electric locos and 1750 diesel locos would be fitted with this device. The driver would be expected to demonstrate his activity in one form or the other every minute, failing which the device would sound an alarm beep.
If the driver still remained unresponsive, it would automatically bring the train to a halt. The driver is expected to use any of the application available in his cabin, be it the fan, horn, light, brake or the lever, to name a few.
Come Durga Puja, the Railways will serve food suitable for diabetics . This service will be introduced in two premier trains on the Howrah-Delhi route — the Rajdhani Express and Duronto. The dessert will be sugar-free ice cream.
